Liesbet Jacobs

Affiliation: PhD researcher at the Free University of Brussels (VUB, Brussels) and the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren)

Research stay at CNR-IRPI: From June to September 2016 she will stay at CNR-IRPI in Perugia to get acquainted with the techniques developed in the geomorphological group at CNR-IRPI. With a longstanding tradition in structural mapping, landslide identification, susceptibility mapping and hazard analysis, CNR-IRPI lies at the heart of landslide research in Europe and worldwide. With this research stay she hopes to develop a strong methodological basis in susceptibility mapping and to apply state-of-the-art susceptibility techniques to my two study areas in Equatorial Africa: The Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda and the Bamboutos Caldera in Cameroon. This research stay was funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).

Short resume: Her research is focused on the biophysical factors controlling the occurrence of landslides in equatorial Africa. Gaining more insight to the controlling and triggering factors of landslides to better understand spatial and temporal patterns is one of the major research goals. This PhD research is part of a larger project called AfReSlide which is centered around resilience strategies for landslides in equatorial Africa with a focus on Cameroon and Uganda.
