Education:

  1. degree in physics (more or less a MS) at the university of Bologna in 1974 (Italian old university system)
  2. Four years, post-degree fellowship, specializing in soil erosion and conservation

Biography:


Personal info

Physicist (University of Bologna, 1974), his research activities begun part time in 1976, while teaching maths and physics in public and private schools. He continued during 1978-1982 with a fellowship of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) in the framework of a national research project CNR-P.F. Conservazione del Suolo (Soil Conservation)   at the Istituto per lo Studio e la Difesa del Suolo (Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) in Florence, where he specialized in soil erosion and conservation.

In 1982 he joined the permanent staff of CNR as researcher at the Centro di Studio per la Genesi, Classificazione e Cartografia del Suolo  (Research Centre for Soil Genesis, Classification and Cartography, at the University of Florence) which later merged into the Istituto di Ricerca per la Genesi ed Ecologia del Suolo (Research Institute for Soil Genesis and Ecology).

Since 2003 he has been working for the CNR - Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica (Research Institute for Hydrogeological Protection) as research director.

Research activity

Present Research interests:

Soil erosion and desertification with special emphasis on the role of soil and vegetation, and long-term anthropic influence; runoff production and water infiltration; development of algorithms and models for describing and explaining processes; biodiversity and vegetation; landscape evolution and human impact; climate change effects.
